III REFLECTION / JOURNALING

Reflection is the process in which the student examines the effect of the service. In this they explore what they have learned, what they can do and why what they've done matters. The information on this page will assist in guiding this reflection. You may need to download a helper application to view documents if you do not already have one.

Portfolio assessment:

There are a large number of rubrics that will assist you in evaluating student success. We utilized a portfolio approach that allowed the students to “compile the experience” in a 3-ring binder.

Contents of the notebook included outlines and materials from of all of the classroom modules, forms (job descriptions, confidentiality agreements) as well as individual journal entries, which varied from simple reminders of the day’s activities to significant essays. The journal entries can be evaluated as stand-alone increments, or as contributing to a whole. We chose the latter, with a culminating essay. See Portfolio Assessment assignment.

Additional points were accumulated for individuality, timeliness and completeness. Students were able to personalize and capture some of the “flavor” of their service sites in their portfolios.
